How Clothes Should Fit Men: A Practical Checklist

Good fit follows the body without unnecessary pulling, collapsing or excess fabric. The exact silhouette can vary, but the garment should still look intentional.

Shirts

Shoulder seams should align closely with your shoulders; buttons should not strain; sleeves should end around the wrist bone for most dress shirts.

Trousers

The waistband should stay put without a belt doing all the work. Choose the rise intentionally and keep the hem from pooling excessively unless the cut calls for it.

Jackets

The shoulder is the hardest area to alter. Prioritize it first, then adjust sleeve and body where tailoring is practical.
